Importing a used car from France to Denmark: practical guide

Yes, as a private individual resident in Denmark, you can buy a used car in France and have it permanently registered here. The most important decision comes before payment, however: can you document the seller's right to sell, the car's identity and its current condition – and do you have a lawful transport plan? If even one link is unclear, you should postpone the transaction. A French inspection report or database extract cannot replace a physical pre-purchase inspection. 1 2 3

This guide applies to an ordinary, previously registered passenger car for personal use. The main sequence is: check the car and documents, sign correctly, choose a transport method, notify any driving on foreign plates before entry, complete a Danish extended registration inspection (udvidet registreringssyn), obtain a vehicle valuation (værdifastsættelse), pay Danish vehicle registration tax (registreringsafgift), and finally buy number plates. 4

The decision before you pay

Start with the French registration certificate, the carte grise. The name must be the seller's, and the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the certificate, car and purchase agreement must be identical. All co-holders named on the certificate must sign. If the car is leased with an option to purchase, only the owning finance company may sell it. Therefore, do not pay someone who merely uses the car without documented authorisation from the owner. 1

Then investigate three distinct matters that should not be confused: administrative history, the statutory roadworthiness inspection and the car's current condition. Ask the seller to share a HistoVec report; it may shed light on administrative status and technical-inspection information, but can leave gaps in the service, repair and accident history. Review invoices and service history separately. Similarly, Danish consumers are advised to check the original registration certificate, inspection report and service history, and to have the car technically examined before purchase. 1 3

A CarAudit inspection is a physical pre-purchase inspection performed by a certified technician. France is on the verified Danish list of countries where the inspection can be performed. It is a check of the car's current physical condition – not a Danish registration inspection (registreringssyn), Danish customs inspection (toldsyn), proof of ownership, mileage guarantee or a promise that the car is and remains free from faults. 5

French documents and technical inspection

At handover, you must receive the complete carte grise, crossed through, dated with the time and signed, as well as your copy of the signed transfer form Cerfa 15776. You must also receive a certificat de situation administrative that is less than 15 days old. Check the documents before final payment and retain the originals; the Danish process requires the original foreign registration certificate and normally both parts where the certificate is split. 1 4

If the passenger car is more than four years old and is sold to you as a private individual, the seller must provide the relevant report from the French contrôle technique. The official sales guidance generally uses a report that is less than six months old. If the report requires a reinspection, the two-month deadline must not have passed. In the case of critical defects, repair and reinspection must take place before sale to a private individual. 1 2

Read the defect category precisely. A technical inspection with major defects is valid for two months from the inspection date; with a critical defect, the inspection itself is valid only until the end of the inspection day. Both defect categories require reinspection within two months. It is the validity of the inspection, not the defect, that is being described. Even a recent report is a snapshot and offers no guarantee against material defects or future repair costs. 2 3

Draw up a purchase agreement that identifies the parties, the car and the vehicle identification number (VIN), the purchase price, payment method, stated mileage, included documents and keys, and the time at which risk passes.

Transport from France without plate traps

Where plates are unclear, the safest plan is a professional carrier. The detachable coupon on the French carte grise permits only temporary driving in France; it does not entitle you to drive the car abroad. Temporary plates are not automatically recognised across the EU either. Self-driving therefore requires written confirmation of valid registration and insurance cover for the particular car, driver, dates and every country, as well as any ferry crossing, on the route to Denmark. If this cannot be confirmed, the car must be transported. 1 6

If, as a Danish resident, you actually drive the car into Denmark on foreign plates, you must notify Motorstyrelsen before entry and carry the receipt. You then have 30 days to register it in Denmark. If you have not received a reply after those 30 days, you must not continue using the foreign plates. From arrival to Danish number plates

The primary owner or user must have a Danish address. A used imported car must undergo a Danish registration inspection (registreringssyn), and Motorstyrelsen's import process requires a Danish extended registration inspection (udvidet registreringssyn), comprising a Danish registration inspection (registreringssyn) and Danish customs inspection (toldsyn). The inspection includes, among other things, the car's safety and environmental condition. Bring the original foreign registration certificate and normally both EU certificate parts. 4 7

Plan the inspection and vehicle valuation (værdifastsættelse) close together: the inspection must be no more than four weeks old when you request the valuation. The order is inspection, vehicle valuation (værdifastsættelse), payment of Danish vehicle registration tax (registreringsafgift), and only then registration and purchase of number plates. At the number-plate operator, you must have the relevant parts of the foreign registration certificate, foreign plates if you have them, photo identification, insurance information and the receipt for paid Danish vehicle registration tax (registreringsafgift). Danish registration does not automatically deregister the car with the French authority; clarify the French closing step separately. 4

There is a separate VAT branch, which must not be confused with Danish vehicle registration tax (registreringsafgift). For an EU acquisition, the car is treated as new for VAT purposes if delivery takes place no later than six months after first use, or if the car has travelled no more than 6,000 km. It is therefore sufficient for one of the conditions to be met. As a private buyer in that situation, you must declare the purchase no later than 14 days after arrival and pay no later than 14 days after Skattestyrelsen's payment letter. These are two different deadlines, each with its own starting point. 4

A budget without a false total price

Prepare the budget before signing, but avoid a single final total until all car-specific items are known. The sources do not set your purchase price, transport, insurance, Danish inspection cost, Danish vehicle registration tax (registreringsafgift) or number-plate price. A carrier and self-driving are alternatives; include only the chosen solution in your own total. VAT is included only if the OR test above makes the car new for VAT purposes. 4 6
