Importing a used car from Spain to Denmark: step by step

Yes, as a private individual resident in Denmark, you can buy a used car in Spain and have it permanently registered in Denmark. The key safe decision is to make the purchase conditional on clarifying the car’s identity, the seller’s authority to sell, any Spanish encumbrances and its physical condition before you pay. You must then choose either documented driving home on Spanish green temporary plates or carriage on a vehicle transporter. Only after arrival does the Danish process of inspection, valuation, vehicle registration tax and number plates follow. 1 2 3 4

This guide applies to one ordinary, previously registered passenger car for personal use. The Spanish information was checked on 11 September 2026, while the Danish information was checked on 15 September 2026. You should therefore reconfirm deadlines, document requirements and the status of the specific case before you act. 1 4

The decision before you pay

Order the full vehicle report from Spain’s traffic authority, DGT, and match the registered holder, registration number and vehicle identification number (VIN) against the car, seller and original documents. The free reduced report shows only the first Spanish registration date and incident warnings. The full report additionally includes, among other things, the registered holder, history of the Spanish statutory vehicle inspection (ITV), odometer reading, number of holders, encumbrances, outstanding recalls and reported maintenance. Maintenance data, however, comes only from participating workshops; missing repairs, servicing and damage therefore cannot be ruled out. 1

A database report also does not tell you the car’s actual condition today. Have the car physically inspected before purchase, and review the original registration certificate, service history and relevant inspection reports. A recent statutory inspection is a snapshot, not a guarantee against material faults. 5

Agreement, ownership and Spanish encumbrances

The name in the DGT report must match the seller. Use a purchase agreement signed by buyer and seller on every page, or obtain the company’s invoice. If there are several registered holders, all must sign. The registered holder, a third party with documented ownership or an authorised representative may apply for export deregistration; you must therefore check the applicant’s authority and retain the agreement or invoice. 1 2 3

Treat each registered encumbrance under its own rule. A reserva de dominio, a retention of title arising from finance, blocks the transfer until it has been removed from the Registro de Bienes Muebles, or the buyer’s assumption of the obligation is documented. A balance statement from the lender is not itself the registered removal. An embargo, an attachment, and a precinto, an administrative restriction, are different matters: a transfer may be registered with the buyer’s acknowledgement, but a precinto prevents issue of the vehicle’s circulation permit and must be lifted before lawful driving. 2

Export deregistration and safe transport

Request definitive Spanish export deregistration before the car is registered in Denmark. A precinto or a restriction on disposal can block deregistration and must be resolved under the applicable rule. After deregistration, DGT points to two routes: green temporary plates or towing/other carriage on a vehicle transporter. The export-side requirement for valid ITV for cars over four years old expressly applies to exports to countries outside the EU and must not be transferred to this route to Denmark. 3

The green Spanish export permit is valid for 60 days and requires both prior definitive export deregistration and valid ITV. The application is based, among other things, on a purchase agreement or invoice as proof of ownership, and the original vehicle documents are used when the plates are issued. If the car is driven, insurance is required. The temporary plates, however, are not automatically mutually recognised throughout the EU. Obtain written confirmation of recognition and insurance cover for the specific car, driver, dates, all transit countries and any ferry crossings. If the whole chain cannot be confirmed, choose carriage on a vehicle transporter. 6 7

On arrival in Denmark

If, as a Denmark resident, you bring the car into Denmark on foreign plates, you must notify Motorstyrelsen of the use before entry and carry the receipt. The car must be registered in Denmark within 30 days. If you have not received a response by the deadline, you must not continue using the foreign plates. The Danish notification does not make an invalid Spanish plate or insufficient insurance valid. The primary owner or user must have a Danish address. 4

A used imported car must undergo a Danish registration inspection (registreringssyn). Motorstyrelsen’s import process requires a Danish extended registration inspection (udvidet registreringssyn), which consists of a Danish registration inspection (registreringssyn) and a Danish customs inspection (toldsyn). Bring the original foreign registration certificate and normally both parts if the certificate was issued in two EU parts. When you request vehicle valuation (værdifastsættelse), the inspection must be no more than four weeks old. The Danish registration inspection (registreringssyn) checks the car’s safety and environmental condition, but is not the same as a physical pre-purchase inspection. 4 8

The order is inspection, vehicle valuation (værdifastsættelse), payment of Danish vehicle registration tax (registreringsafgift), then registration and purchase of Danish number plates. At the number-plate operator, you need the relevant parts of the foreign registration certificate, foreign plates if you have them, photo identification, insurance details and receipt for the paid Danish vehicle registration tax (registreringsafgift). Motorstyrelsen does not deregister the car with the Spanish authority; the Spanish completion must therefore be handled separately. 4

VAT: determine whether the car is new under the EU rule

Although the car is described as used, it is new for VAT purposes in an EU acquisition if it is delivered no later than six months after first use, or if it has travelled no more than 6,000 km. It is an either-or test: one fulfilled condition is enough. If the rule applies to the car, the private buyer must declare the purchase no later than 14 days after arrival and pay no later than 14 days after Skattestyrelsen’s payment letter. The two deadlines therefore start at different times. 4

Budget without false precision

Danish vehicle registration tax (registreringsafgift), transport, insurance, inspection and plates depend on the specific car and the providers selected. Obtain documented quotations and authority calculations rather than entering estimates as certain figures. Include only one of the two transport branches in your working budget, and add VAT as a separate branch if the car meets the newness test.

Practical checks before purchase and registration

Use the list as stop points. An open item means you should not yet treat the requirement as fulfilled. Keep reports, receipts, agreements and written confirmations together so the car’s identity can be followed throughout the process.

Is the free DGT report enough before buying?

No. The reduced report shows the first registration date in Spain and warnings, but not the full set of information on the holder, ITV, odometer reading, number of holders, encumbrances, recalls and reported maintenance. Can I buy the car if it has a reserva de dominio?

Not as an ordinary unconditional purchase. The retention of title blocks the transfer until it has been removed from the movable-property register, or a documented subrogation has been completed. A statement of the outstanding balance does not prove that the register entry has been removed. 2

Are embargo and precinto the same thing?

No. A transfer with an embargo may in some cases be registered when the buyer acknowledges the matter.
