Importing a car from Austria to Denmark: step by step

Yes, as a private individual resident in Denmark, you can buy a used car in Austria and register it permanently in Denmark. However, the key decision is not simply whether the price looks attractive. Before paying, you need to be able to connect the seller, the car and the original documents; you must then choose a transport method that is actually lawful and insured for the entire route. Read the service history, invoices and mileage information as different pieces that need to fit together. A database entry tells you only what that particular database has recorded. A periodic inspection describes a statutory inspection at a point in time, not the car's entire current condition. Danish consumer guidance recommends the original registration certificate, inspection report, service history and a technical examination before purchase; a car that has recently passed inspection is not thereby guaranteed to be free of material defects. 5

A physical pre-purchase inspection should therefore take place while you can still walk away from the deal or make the agreement conditional on its result. Choose safe transport to Denmark

For self-driving, Austrian Überstellungskennzeichen, meaning transfer number plates, can be issued for at least 3 and no more than 21 days. They require insurance during the period of use. The competent Austrian registration office is determined by where the applicant is currently staying in Austria, regardless of ordinary residence, and a representative must have written authority. 2

The validity of an Austrian plate in Austria does not prove that it is recognised in other countries. Temporary plates are not mutually recognised throughout the EU. Therefore obtain written confirmation for the specific car, plate, driver, dates and every transit country, as well as continuous insurance cover for the entire route, including relevant transport legs. Notify entry and complete the Danish steps

If, as a Denmark resident, you drive the car into Denmark on foreign number plates, you must submit notification to Motorstyrelsen before entry and carry the receipt while driving. A used imported car must undergo a Danish registration inspection before registration. Motorstyrelsen's import process requires a Danish extended registration inspection (udvidet registreringssyn), which consists of a Danish registration inspection (registreringssyn) and a Danish customs inspection (toldsyn). VAT is a separate track. On acquisition in another EU country, the car is treated as new for Danish VAT purposes if it is delivered no later than six months after first use, or if it has travelled no more than 6,000 km. This is an either-or criterion, not a requirement for both. If the car meets the threshold, the private buyer must declare the purchase no later than 14 days after arrival and pay no later than 14 days after Skattestyrelsen's payment letter. Set a budget without false precision

The total cost cannot responsibly be calculated from the purchase price alone. Obtain quotes and decisions for your specific car and chosen transport. The table is a working framework, not a quotation; do not add up a total until all relevant items are known, and include only one of the alternative transport methods.

The vehicle registration tax depends on the specific valuation, and any Danish VAT liability follows the special definition above. Also set aside a genuine contingency for unforeseen repairs after the physical inspection. Neither an inspection report nor a CarAudit inspection removes the risk of later defects.

Use this checklist before and after payment

A good handover moment is documented: sign only when the VIN and seller details match, the payment terms are clear, the originals have been counted, and the transport choice has been decided. Keep receipts and photographs of the handed-over documents and plates.
