You live in Denmark and have found a used car in Sweden. Before paying or arranging collection, you need answers to three questions: what do you know about the car and its documents, how will you get it home, and how will it be registered in Denmark? This guide follows the process from pre-purchase checks to Danish number plates. Sweden is the country of purchase and inspection; Denmark is your country of residence and the country where the car will be registered.
Start with the car’s condition and documentation
This guide is based on information from authorities and service providers dated 14 and 15 September 2026.
A recent roadworthiness inspection is not the same as a pre-purchase examination. Forbrug.dk describes a roadworthiness inspection as a spot check and emphasises that a recently inspected car may still have significant faults. Therefore, review the registration certificate, inspection report and service history, and have the car’s physical condition examined.
You can book a CarAudit inspection while the car is in Sweden. This is a physical pre-purchase inspection carried out by a certified technician. It does not replace the checks required for Danish registration. Nor does it include vehicle valuation (værdifastsættelse) for Danish tax purposes, tax and registration work, insurance or transport. The report does not guarantee that the car is free of significant faults or will not develop faults later. Check the vehicle identification number (VIN), registration certificate and Kreditköp
Compare the car’s vehicle identification number (VIN) with the registration certificate and sales information. Record the odometer reading and review the service history with the seller. Have discrepancies resolved with documentary evidence before paying.
The Swedish registration certificate has two parts. Only the most recently issued certificate is valid. Part 2 is used for written notification of a change of ownership or deregistration. Ask to see both parts of the current certificate, not just an older copy. See Transportstyrelsen’s guidance on registration certificates.
Also check the car’s details with Transportstyrelsen. The Kreditköp marker indicates a registered credit purchase. According to the authority, unfulfilled credit obligations can put the buyer at risk of paying for the car twice. Ask the seller for documentary evidence that a registered credit purchase has been resolved before payment; a verbal explanation should not be relied on alone.
A record check is an administrative check. The absence of a marker is not a guarantee of ownership, mileage or the car’s physical condition. Transportstyrelsen’s guidance on changes of ownership is the starting point for the check, but replaces neither a document review nor a physical inspection. Use the decision table to distinguish between reasons to stop, matters needing clarification and grounds for proceeding.

Get the agreement and original documents in order
Use the written agreement to record what you are buying: the parties, VIN and registration number, purchase price, stated odometer reading, known faults, agreed equipment, and payment and collection terms. Record important statements about the car and any remedial work in writing. These are practical recommendations for the agreement’s contents. If you have already agreed to buy, use this review to identify points that still need clarification with the seller. The decision table does not determine whether you can change or withdraw from an agreement you have entered into.
Also agree who will handle the Swedish notification and which original documents will be handed over or submitted. Part 2 has a role in the Swedish process, while Denmark normally requires both parts of a foreign EU registration certificate. Clarify how the documents will be handled before anyone sends away the originals. Do not assume a copy can replace a required original.
Motorstyrelsen does not deregister the car with the Swedish authority. Keep the agreement, service history, reports and arrangements for handling the documents together. If it is unclear what will happen to the originals, clarify this with the authorities before collection.

Choose transport before arranging collection
Choose between transport on a car transporter and driving the car home using Swedish temporary export registration for which both you and the car meet the conditions. Neither option by itself completes Danish registration.
A buyer permanently resident outside Sweden can apply for temporary export registration for a used car. Transportstyrelsen sets conditions relating to, among other things, the car’s inspection status, taxes and charges, driving bans, insurance, original documents and number plates. The registration is valid for one month, cannot be extended, and the car must leave Sweden.
The registration alone does not establish that you may drive in Denmark or every transit country. Obtain confirmation that the registration, plates and insurance are valid for the specific route and planned dates. This also applies to a direct route from Sweden to Denmark. Ask for an answer covering the exact registration and insurance you intend to use, and keep the confirmations. General information about export registration is not route-specific confirmation. If these matters cannot be clarified, you should choose a transport company rather than drive yourself.

Notify Motorstyrelsen before bringing the car in on foreign plates
As a Danish resident bringing the car into Denmark on foreign number plates, you must notify Motorstyrelsen before entry and carry the receipt. The car must be registered in Denmark within 30 days. If you have not received a response by the deadline, you must not continue to use the foreign plates. Follow Motorstyrelsen’s import guidance.
The Danish notification does not replace confirmation of the Swedish registration’s validity and the insurance cover. The Swedish one-month period and the Danish 30-day deadline are separate conditions. Plan around both, not just whichever is longer.
Also clarify the VAT question below before collection. The deadline for any required VAT declaration runs from the car’s arrival and should not be overlooked while planning inspections and number plates.

Book the Danish extended registration inspection (udvidet registreringssyn) and watch the four-week limit
A used imported car intended for registration in Denmark must undergo a Danish registration inspection (registreringssyn). In Motorstyrelsen’s import process, this is an extended registration inspection: a registration inspection plus the supplementary check called the Danish customs inspection (toldsyn). Færdselsstyrelsen describes the registration inspection as a check of safety and environmental condition. This is a different task from the physical pre-purchase inspection.
You need the original foreign registration certificate; for an EU certificate, both parts are normally required. If one part is missing, clarify with the authority which documents are acceptable in your case before making further arrangements. Do not assume that Swedish deregistration automatically replaces Danish document requirements.
The inspection must be no more than four weeks old when you request a vehicle valuation, meaning the determination of the car’s value for the tax process. Plan the inspection and request together. The four-week requirement relates to the valuation request, not to a general permission to drive. See Motorstyrelsen’s sequence of steps.

Keep Danish vehicle registration tax (registreringsafgift) and VAT separate
The inspection is followed by valuation and payment of the registration tax, which forms part of Danish registration. Only then do registration and number plate purchase follow. The purchase price in Sweden is therefore not a complete import budget on its own.
VAT must be assessed separately. For a purchase within the EU, the car is treated as new under VAT rules if delivery takes place no later than six months after first use, or it has travelled no more than 6,000 km. This is an OR test: meeting either condition is enough. A previously registered car can therefore still be new for VAT purposes.
In that situation, as a private buyer, you must declare the purchase no later than 14 days after the car’s arrival in Denmark. VAT must be paid no later than 14 days after the payment letter from Skattestyrelsen. These are two different deadlines. The VAT process should not be postponed while the registration tax is being processed. Motorstyrelsen explains both imports and VAT.

Buy number plates once the registration tax is paid
Take the relevant parts of the foreign registration certificate, foreign plates if you have them, photo ID, insurance details and the receipt for payment of the registration tax to the number plate operator. Arrange the visit after payment, not as a substitute for the preceding steps.
Also check that there is still a clear agreement about Swedish deregistration. Danish registration does not mean Motorstyrelsen will deregister the car in Sweden. The document list and sequence are set out on Motorstyrelsen’s import page.

Build your budget before paying, and use the checklist throughout
Use the budget table as a working framework, not a price estimate. Obtain quotes for the physical inspection, transport or driving the car home, inspections and number plates, and keep registration tax and any VAT separate. Note which amounts are documented and which are still unknown.
Also set aside a separate contingency based on the car’s condition and unresolved costs. The contingency is your own budgeting choice, not an official charge or a standard surcharge. Use the checklist before payment, collection, entry into Denmark and number plate purchase, so unresolved details do not surface only when you need to move on to the next stage.

Can I continue using foreign plates if Motorstyrelsen has not replied?
Not after the 30-day deadline. A lack of response does not give you the right to continue driving on the foreign plates. Before that deadline, the registration, plates and insurance must also be valid for the specific journey; notification alone does not resolve this.

Is a record check showing no Kreditköp enough to approve the purchase?
No. The check is administrative and does not guarantee ownership, mileage or physical condition. Also review the current registration certificate and service history, and have the car examined before purchase. A recent roadworthiness inspection is no guarantee against significant faults either.
