Importing a car from Slovakia to Denmark: how to do it

Yes, as a private individual resident in Denmark, you can buy a used car in Slovakia and have it permanently registered in Denmark. The safe sequence is to check the seller, car, history and original documents before payment, agree lawful export and transport, and only then complete the Danish process of inspection, vehicle valuation, Danish vehicle registration tax (registreringsafgift) and number plates. 1 The most important decision is made before the purchase: can identity, ownership or authority to dispose of the car, mileage history, physical condition and transport home be documented adequately?

This guide applies to one ordinary, previously registered passenger car for personal use. The Slovak sources were checked on 10 September 2026, while the Danish authority and consumer sources were checked on 15 September 2026. 2 1 Rules, documents and quotations should therefore be confirmed for the specific transaction and travel date.

Make the purchase decision before you pay

Start with the vehicle identification number (VIN). Match the number on the car with the registration papers and purchase agreement, and check that the person selling or signing is in fact the registered owner or holder, or can document their authority. For Slovak export deregistration, the registered owner or holder must, among other things, provide identification, the existing number plate, details of the foreign buyer and Part I of the registration certificate and Part II if it has been issued. Those details must match your purchase document and the car's physical VIN. 2 3

Request current extracts from RPZV: ODO-Pass for mileage and AUTO-Pass for recorded vehicle information. The material may include records of mileage, blocks, theft, leasing, number of owners and reported damage. Compare the extracts with invoices, service history, wear and the car's instruments. Missing entries are not proof that nothing has happened, and the database proves neither legal ownership nor the car's current mechanical condition. 4

A recent periodic inspection or other statutory inspection should not stand alone either. Danish consumer guidance describes an inspection as a spot check that may miss faults, and recommends a separate technical examination before purchase as well as checking the original registration certificate, inspection report and service history. 5

Put the purchase and Slovak export in writing

The purchase agreement should state unambiguously the parties, the car's VIN, mileage, price, payment method, known faults, included equipment and documents, and when risk and keys are handed over. Do not pay on the basis of copies alone. See the originals, and agree in advance who will complete the export deregistration, who will pay each cost, and what happens if the necessary documents or plates cannot be issued.

In the ordinary Slovak export route, a report from an originality inspection is required and must be no more than 15 days old. A result equivalent to fit for use may be used. A temporarily fit-for-use result may be used for export only when the vehicle identifiers are legible and can be determined reliably. 2 The exceptions are narrow: the requirement does not apply if the holder does not change on export, or if the car was first registered no more than 60 days earlier. A recently issued duplicate of a document is not the same as a new first registration. 2

On export deregistration, the police issue Parts I and II of the registration certificate in the foreign holder's name and may, on request, issue a special V number plate. The issued documents and V plate are valid for no more than 30 days from export deregistration. 2 Have the specific authority and signature procedure confirmed for the channel chosen by the parties; the sources do not document that every transaction can be completed in the same way.

Choose transport without guessing about plates and insurance

A Slovak V plate does not in itself make self-driving to Denmark lawful. Before departure, you must have written confirmation that the specific plate is recognised and that insurance covers the specific car, driver, period and every country on the selected route. General EU guidance does not approve a particular route or policy. If the entire chain cannot be documented, carriage by a transporter with the car carried as a load, or on a trailer, is the robust choice. 2 3

Do not compare quotation prices alone. A transport quotation should describe the collection location, delivery, liability, insurance cover, handling of keys and documents, and the procedure in the event of damage. If self-driving, you must also allow for valid plates, insurance, fuel, road tolls, overnight stays and a plan if the car cannot continue.

If the car is driven into Denmark on foreign plates, as a Denmark resident you must notify Motorstyrelsen of the driving before entry and carry the receipt. The car must be registered in Denmark within 30 days. If no reply has yet arrived after the deadline, you must not continue to use the foreign plates. The Danish notification does not make an invalid Slovak plate or inadequate transit insurance valid. 1 3

Complete Danish registration in the right order

The primary owner or user must have a Danish address. A used imported car must undergo a Danish extended registration inspection (udvidet registreringssyn), which includes a Danish registration inspection (registreringssyn) and Danish customs inspection (toldsyn). Bring the original foreign registration certificate, normally both EU parts. The inspection establishes, among other things, safety and environmental condition, but is not the same as a pre-purchase inspection. When you request vehicle valuation (værdifastsættelse), the inspection must be no more than four weeks old. 1 6

The order is: extended registration inspection, vehicle valuation, payment of vehicle registration tax and then registration and purchase of Danish number plates. At the number-plate operator, you must have the relevant parts of the foreign registration certificate, the foreign plates if you have them, photo identification, insurance information and receipt for paid vehicle registration tax. Motorstyrelsen does not deregister the car with the Slovak authority; that part must therefore be handled separately. 1

VAT requires separate clarification. For an EU purchase, the car is treated as new for VAT purposes in Denmark if it is delivered no later than six months after first use, or if it has travelled no more than 6,000 km. It is therefore enough for one of the conditions to be met. In that situation, as a private buyer you must declare the purchase no later than 14 days after arrival and pay no later than 14 days after Skattestyrelsen's payment letter. The two deadlines have different starting points. 1

Prepare a budget with open amounts

There is no source basis here for a single standard total. The purchase price, checks, export documents, transport, insurance, Danish inspections, tax, any VAT and plates depend on the car and the solutions selected. Therefore obtain quotations and authority decisions, and only calculate a total once all compulsory items and one transport branch are known.

Keep the transporter and self-driving separate as alternative choices. A CarAudit inspection is an optional physical pre-purchase inspection, whereas Danish registration inspection and customs inspection are authority steps. A contingency should be available for unexpected storage, new transport or faults, but it should not conceal missing quotations.

Use this checklist

Keep copies of the agreement, payment trail, photos of the VIN and mileage, RPZV extracts, originality report, registration papers, export deregistration, plates, insurance, transport documents, Danish prior notification and all receipts. A single file makes it easier to see whether one step is actually complete before the next payment is released.

Is a recent Slovak inspection enough to assess the car?

No. A statutory inspection is not a guarantee against significant faults. Use history and service records as leads, but also have the car's current physical and technical condition examined before payment. 5, 4

What can ODO-Pass and AUTO-Pass tell me?

The RPZV material may show recorded information about, among other things, mileage, blocks, theft, leasing, number of owners and reported damage. It is not a complete history, proof of ownership or a mechanical examination, so discrepancies and missing periods must be investigated separately. 4

When is the Slovak originality report required?

Does Motorstyrelsen automatically deregister the car in Slovakia?
