This guide is for you if you live in Denmark and are buying a previously registered passenger car in Poland for permanent registration in Denmark. Poland is the country of purchase and the location of the pre-purchase inspection; Denmark is the country of registration. The guide is based on sources verified on 14 and 15 September 2026.
Separate the car's condition from its registration
Start with two separate tasks: assessing the car before purchase and planning its Danish registration. A positive outcome in one does not complete the other. Ask for the documents and service history, and have the car's current condition checked before committing financially.
A recent inspection report does not guarantee that a used car is free from significant faults. Forbrug.dk recommends a separate technical pre-purchase examination and a review of the registration certificate, inspection report and service history. A statutory inspection is a spot check and can miss faults.
CarAudit can carry out a physical pre-purchase inspection of a car located in Poland. A CarAudit inspection is not a Danish registration inspection (registreringssyn), a Danish customs inspection (toldsyn) or a vehicle valuation (værdifastsættelse), and does not include handling Danish vehicle registration tax (registreringsafgift), registration, insurance or transport. Check the car's identity and history before deciding
Ask the seller for the registration number, vehicle identification number (VIN) and date of first registration. The official Polish vehicle history service requires all three. Compare these details with the car and its registration certificate, and keep the result with the purchase documents.
The report is for information, not an official document replacing the registration certificate. Information about risks in other countries depends on data availability. Missing foreign records must therefore not be taken as confirmation that there have been no problems.
Neither the history service nor a CarAudit inspection alone guarantees title to the car, a complete mileage history or its future condition. Use the history to ask specific questions, not to conclude your checks. If mileage records or the car's identity do not match across the material, delay payment until you have a verifiable explanation. Limited information, however, calls for clarification; it is not in itself evidence of fraud.

Gather the documents and clarify the seller's notification
Gather the ownership documents, such as the purchase agreement or invoice, together with the foreign registration certificate, number plates and relevant technical inspection records. Agree before payment which originals and plates you will receive. The Polish registration guidance sets out the document types, but you must confirm the exact set required for your case with the competent authority. Do not treat a general checklist as prior approval of the car.
Notifying the sale is a separate task for the seller. Under the Polish official guidance, the registered seller must notify the disposal within 30 calendar days and submit the buyer's details plus a copy or photograph of the disposal document.
This notification is neither deregistration nor temporary registration for export. If the seller says the paperwork will be sorted, clarify which action they mean, who will do it and which documents you will receive. A receipt for the sale notification does not automatically resolve the transport arrangements.

Decide how to bring the car home before arranging collection
Decide whether to have a vehicle transport company collect the car or to drive it home yourself. If driving, establish both the validity of the number plates and insurance cover for the entire journey, including any transit countries and Denmark.
The Polish registration procedure allows the owner to apply for temporary registration for export. A temporary permit and legalised temporary number plates may be issued for no more than 30 days. A one-off 14-day extension is possible only to clarify registration matters and is not automatic.
The procedure alone does not establish that the plates and insurance are recognised throughout the route. Get specific confirmation from the relevant authorities and insurer before driving. If you cannot confirm both, use a vehicle transport company. Transport does not, however, replace the paperwork or the subsequent Danish registration.

Notify entry on foreign plates in advance
As a Danish resident bringing the car into Denmark on foreign number plates, you must notify Motorstyrelsen before entry and carry the receipt in the car. Motorstyrelsen's import guidance then sets a 30-day deadline for registering the car in Denmark.
If you have not received a reply by the deadline, you must not continue using the car on its foreign plates. Do not plan on a pending application giving you extra driving time.
Keep the Danish deadline separate from the validity of the Polish temporary registration. Denmark's 30-day period does not establish that the Polish plates or insurance remain valid throughout. The receipt from Motorstyrelsen does not replace confirmation of the plates and insurance for the journey.

Plan the Danish extended registration inspection (udvidet registreringssyn) and valuation together
An imported used car must undergo a Danish registration inspection before registration. Motorstyrelsen's import procedure requires an extended registration inspection, comprising a registration inspection and a customs inspection. Færdselsstyrelsen describes the registration inspection as checking, among other things, the car's safety and environmental condition. This is separate from a pre-purchase CarAudit inspection.
You must bring the original foreign registration certificate. For EU registration certificates, you normally need both parts if the certificate has two. Check that the documents are complete before collection, rather than discovering a problem once the car is in Denmark.
The inspection must be no more than four weeks old when you request the vehicle valuation, meaning the authority's assessment of the car's value for the tax procedure. This deadline applies to the valuation request, not the day you buy number plates. Coordinate the two steps so the documents are ready and you can submit the request after the inspection.

Check VAT early, even if the car is advertised as used
A previously registered car can still count as new under Denmark's VAT rule for purchases in another EU country. According to Motorstyrelsen's guidance, a car is new for VAT purposes if delivery takes place no later than six months after first use, or if it has travelled no more than 6,000 km. Meeting either condition is enough.
To fall outside this definition, the car must therefore both be delivered more than six months after first use and have travelled more than 6,000 km. Ask for these details before buying; the word 'used' in an advert does not settle the VAT question.
If the car falls under the rule for a new means of transport, you must, as a private buyer, declare the purchase within 14 days of the car's arrival in Denmark. VAT must be paid within 14 days of the payment letter from Skattestyrelsen. These are two separate deadlines with different starting points. Do not wait until the registration tax has been processed or the number plates are ready before declaring the purchase for VAT.

Pay registration tax before registering the car and buying plates
The Danish sequence is the extended registration inspection, valuation, payment of registration tax, then registration and purchase of number plates. Registration tax must therefore be paid before buying the plates. Follow Motorstyrelsen's import procedure and keep any VAT obligation separate from this tax procedure.
At the number plate operator, you must have the relevant parts of the foreign registration certificate, the foreign number plates if you have them, photo ID, insurance details and the receipt for registration tax payment. Check the documents before attending rather than assuming a copy or a missing certificate part will be accepted.
Motorstyrelsen does not deregister the car with the foreign authority. The Polish formalities must therefore be clarified separately and must not be confused with the seller's sale notification.

Base your budget on documented costs, not expected savings
Include the purchase price, pre-purchase checks, transport, insurance, Danish inspection, taxes and number plates in one budget. Mark each item as documented, requiring a quote or still unresolved. A blank field does not mean zero cost.
The budget table is a planning framework without standard prices. Use specific quotes for your chosen services and the authorities' decisions for the relevant tax amounts. Also set aside a contingency of your own choosing for issues that emerge during the inspection, rather than assuming the car is fault-free.

Can the Polish history report replace a physical inspection?

Can I keep using foreign plates while waiting for Motorstyrelsen?
Not after the Danish 30-day deadline if you have not yet received a reply. A pending application does not entitle you to continue using the car. The validity of the plates and insurance must also be confirmed separately.

Yes. If the car has travelled no more than 6,000 km, it meets the mileage condition even if it is more than six months old. The rule uses or, not and: either delivery no later than six months after first use or no more than 6,000 km is sufficient.
